I had a contractor put a metal roof on my house and i just paid him the labor as i bought the material?
DL asked:
He asked to see the receipt to make sure all the material was there. After the job was done I remembered that i gave it to him to look over but he never gave it back. I called him asking for it and he said that i wouldnt need it. Why would he do this and i think i do need it for my warranty? What can i do to get it back?

Go to where you purchased the material and request another reciept.
He wants it for the same reason you do. He plans to deduct it from his taxes as an expense. Demand that he return it immediately, if he refuses, call the board that controls contractor licenses in your state.
He is planning on using the receipt for tax purposes and possible warranty on other jobs. Yes, you do need it for your warranty. Tell him he is not getting any money until you get the receipt, that receipt belongs to you. If he refuses then call the place where you bought the metal, tell them the story and see about a receipt from them and that you will take him to small claims court if necessary.
Tell the guy, that the receipt is your property and you want it returned immediately period. If he balks, call the state contractor’s licensing board and report the theft.
